UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team dropped a 70-63 decision to visiting Tiffin University on Monday night (Jan. 11). The loss puts the Lady Cardinals at 4-9 overall on the season with a 2-6 record in the GLIAC. The Dragons improve to 5-8 overall with a 2-6 mark in league play as well.
SVSU led by one at halftime, 30-29. Tiffin would take the lead early in the second half, though, until the 4:57 mark, when the Cardinals got out to a 59-58 advantage. The Dragons, however, would once again creep out in front at the 1:04 mark, where they held a 64-63 lead. Tiffin would not relinquish that lead, as they used foul shots down the stretch to secure the seven-point victory.
Junior Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the contest to lead SVSU. Freshman Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) also recorded a double-double, netting 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Junior Rhonda Gusa (Harbor Beach, Mich./Delta College) had 10 points as well, and freshman Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) had 10 boards.
SVSU hits the road this weekend, as the Cardinals travel to play Wayne State on Thursday for a 5:30 pm contest and Northwood on Saturday for a 4:00 pm tip.
