Lacrosse Outpaced by Lakers in Second Half

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's lacrosse team fell to Grand Valley State 20-4 in a GLIAC contest on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (5-7, 4-0 GLIAC) cut the lead to five goals at the start of the second half, but the Lakers (5-7, 4-0 GLIAC) tallied 11 unanswered goals to take the win.

Lainee Carmean (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores HS) led SVSU with three points (two goals, one assist) in the contest. She tied for a team-best two draw controls and also added a ground ball to her stat line in the losing effort.

GVSU struck first with a goal in the opening half minute of play to take an early 1-0 lead. Carmean responded with an unassisted goal at the 12:02 mark to knot things up at one goal apiece.

The Lakers added two more scores in the five minutes to hold a 3-1 advantage before Carmean struck again with a goal from a free position attempt to trim the deficit to one with 6:23 remaining in the first frame.

Grand Valley extended things to 5-2 at the end of the quarter, but Briar-Rose Mackey (Saline, Mich. / Saline HS) shook the net in the opening minute of the second off an assist from Ally Schneider in a man-up situation to trail 5-3. The Lakers added four more points to the board to close out the first half with a 9-3 lead at the break.

Abby Lee (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion HS) scored in another man-up advantage for the Cardinals off an assist from Carmean to bring the score within five, 9-4, with just under 10 minutes on the clock in the third stanza.

GVSU took over from there, scoring 11 straight goals to secure the win.

Lee, Mackey, and Schneider tallied one point in the game. Mackey and Schneider were one of four Cardinals to have a team-high two draw controls in the game. Avery Lockwood (Elkridge, Md. / Howard HS) led the Cardinals with four ground balls. Annelle Dykema (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian HS) totaled three ground balls. Mikaila Stone (Murietta, Calif. / Murietta HS) (L, 1-9) made 13 saves in net for SVSU to extend her current streak of six-straight games with 10 or more saves.
