UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University junior Briar-Rose Mackey (Saline, Mich. / Saline HS) and sophomore Mikaila Stone (Murrieta, Calif. / Murrieta HS) swept the GLIAC weekly awards after helping lead the Cardinals to the first win in program history last week in a 13-8 decision over rival Northwood.
Mackey was named the Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a hat trick to help lead the offense in the win. She tallied a shorthanded goal in the third quarter to put SVSU up 7-4. She then added a free position goal in a man-up situation in the fourth that put the deficit back to three goals, 6-9, before completing the three-score performance in the final three minutes to extend the advantage to 12-7.
Stone earned her first career win in net for the Cardinals in the 13-8 win over rival Northwood last week. Stone made several key saves in the game to preserve the lead in the game. She finished with 13 total saves along with four ground balls.
These are the first conference player of the week awards for the Cardinal women's lacrosse team this season, and the first weekly honors of Mackey and Stone's careers.
The team is in California for two Spring Break games against Dominican this week. The first contest is scheduled for tomorrow (March 3) at 6:00 p.m. (ET).
