Cardinals Fall To Huskies, 63-42

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to Michigan Tech University tonight (Feb. 23), 63-42. The Cardinals fall to 6-19 overall on the season and 4-14 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Huskies improve to 18-6 on the season and 13-5 in the conference.

A Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) jump shot put the Cardinals on the scoreboard for the first time at the 18:10 mark of the contest as they trailed the Huskies 4-2. Greene earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors as she posted 17 points and five rebounds to lead SVSU.

Michigan Tech would rally before Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) stepped to the foul line and knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 13-9 with 13:14 to play in the half. Herzog recorded nine rebounds and two blocks on the evening.

Saginaw Valley was unable to capitalize on opportunites for much of the first half as they trailed 31-13 heading into the locker room.

The Cardinals attempted to make a run in the second half when Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) slashed to the bucket for two and cut the Husky advantage to 31-18 just a minute in to the half.

SVSU started to find some rhythm on a Kayla Womack (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North HS) layup at the 16:40 mark that helped trim the Michigan Tech lead to 36-23. Womack finished the contest with 12 points.

Michigan Tech would not allow the Cardinals to get any closer as they went on to the 63-42 victory.

Saginaw Valley will finish off the 2011-12 campaign when they travel to Marquette to battle Northern Michigan University on Saturday (Feb. 25) for an 11:00 AM start.
