UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to Northwood University tonight (Feb. 8), 68-54. The loss drops the Cardinals to 5-17 on the season and 3-12 in the GLIAC, while the Timberwolves improve to 9-12 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
Meijer "Player of the Game" Kayla Womack (Gross Pointe Woods, Mich./North HS) knocked down a jump shot from the corner to increase the slim Cardinal edge to 13-10 with 11:24 to play in the first half.
Saginaw Valley pushed their lead to 20-15 at the 7:30 mark after converting a Northwood turnover into two easy points for Womack. She finished the evening with 18 points, including 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
The Timberwolves proceeded to go on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 23-20 lead.
Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) scored on a tough running jumper to give SVSU a 28-25 advantage with one minute to go in the half. Greene finished the contest with ten points and ten rebounds for her first career double-double.
The Cardinals would take a slim 28-27 edge into the locker room.
Saginaw Valley would struggle to get their offense going in the second half as the Timberwolves took a 36-30 advantage at the first media timeout.
The Cardinals were rejuvenated after the timeout as Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) drove to the hole for a layup to cut the deficit to 39-36 at the 13:14 mark.
The Timberwolves would go on another run to stretch their lead before Boston made a layup to cut the Northwood lead to 55-44 with five minutes to play in regulation. Boston recorded ten points on the night.
However, the Cardinals were unable to cut the deficit any further as the Timberwolves went on to victory, 68-54.
Saginaw Valley fired 80 percent from the free throw line, shooting 16-for-20 for the game.
The Cardinals will return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 15) when they make the short trip to Midland for a rematch with Northwood for a 6:00 PM tip.
