Herzog's Career Night Not Enough As Cardinals Fall

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to Tiffin University tonight (Jan. 26), 57-35. The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-14 on the season and 1-10 in the GLIAC, while the Dragons improve to 15-4 overall and 10-3 in the conference.

The Cardinals were led by Meijer "Player of the Game" Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) who posted her first career triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and a school-record 10 blocks. She broke her single-game record for blocks of nine, which she set last season on Nov. 26 against Virginia State.

Grace's triple-double marks just the ninth occurence this year in Division II with four of them happening inside the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Dragons held an early four-point lead before the Cardinals pushed their way back to take a 13-12 edge at the 11:50 mark of the first half after a pair of Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich.) free throws. Zirzow finished the contest with seven points.

Tiffin would again take the lead and see their largest lead of the half at 24-17 with 3:21 to go until halftime.

Saginaw Valley would trail 26-21 at the intermission. Herzog posted eight points, seven rebounds and six blocks in the first half.

The Cardinals cut the Dragon lead to 26-25 just one minute into the second half as Kayla Womack (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North HS) slashed to the bucket for two.

However, Tiffin would answer the SVSU rally with a run to take a 53-28 advantage with 4:00 remaining in the contest.

The Dragons would ultimately go on to victory by the score of 57-35.

The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 28) when they welcome Ohio Dominican to James E. O'Neill Arena for the first time. Game time is set for 1:00 PM.
