Bulldogs Defeat Cardinals, 66-48.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to Ferris State University tonight (Jan. 7). The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in the GLIAC, while the Bulldogs improve to 8-4 on the season and 6-1 in the conference.

The Cardinals were led by Meijer "Player of the Game" Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) who posted a team-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field including five three-pointers.

The game remained scoreless until the 16:20 mark when Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) hit a bank shot to give the Cardinals the 2-0 edge.

The Bulldogs went on a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to lead 13-2 with 9:26 remaining in the half.

Ferris State built a 16-point lead before Greene connected on a triple to cut the deficit to 22-13 with just over three minutes to play. Greene made two more three-pointers to cut the deficit to 26-23 before the Bulldogs added a basket of their own for a 29-23 lead at the intermission.

Saginaw Valley trimmed the Ferris State advantage to 31-29 early in the second half before the Bulldogs went on a 14-0 run and a 45-29 advantage with 13:25 remaining.

A pair of Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich./Park HS) free throws brought the Cardinals within 12, 52-40, with 8:17 to go in regulation. Green finished the contest with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from the free throw line.

However, the Cardinals would not get any closer as the Bulldogs came away with the victory, 66-48.

The Cardinals will return to action on Thursday (Jan. 12) when they host Northern Michigan University for a 6:00 PM start.
