UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to rival Grand Valley State University tonight (Jan. 5), 50-48 on a buzzer beater. The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers improve to 6-7 on the season and 3-3 in the conference.
The Cardinal defense opened the game aggressive, forcing the Lakers into some early turnovers and a 7-3 advantage with 14:57 left to play in the first half.
Saginaw Valley's Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) increased the lead to 12-7 with a triple with just over ten minutes to play in the half.
A bucket by Morgan Hughes (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) helped push the SVSU lead to 23-18 with just over two minutes to go.
The Cardinals shot 47 percent from the floor in the first half and took a 23-21 edge into halftime.
A three from Meijer "Player of the Game" Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) would give Saginaw Valley a 34-26 lead with 14:05 left in the contest. Greene finished with 12 points on the evening.
SVSU stopped a six minute scoring drought when Kayla Womack (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North HS) hit a bucket to take a 41-38 lead with 5:42 left in regulation.
With the Cardinals trailing by one, Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich.) made a driving layup and drew the foul for a three-point play and a 46-44 SVSU lead.
SVSU trailed 48-46 with under a minute to go in regulation when Womack cut to the basket for two to knot the score at 48 with :15 seconds to go.
With two seconds remaining, Grand Valley's Alex Stelfox would take the inbound pass, turn and knock down a jump shot as time expired to give the Lakers the 50-48 victory.
Saginaw Valley will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 7) when they host Ferris State at 5:00 PM.
