Austin, Tx. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to No. 14 Northeastern State today (Dec. 31), 74-38 on the final day of the St. Edward's New Year's Classic. The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-8 overall on the season, while Northeastern St. improves to 11-1 on the season.
Saginaw Valley was led by Meijer "Player of the Game" Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich.) who scored a game-high 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. She also went 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
SVSU grabbed its only lead of the game, 7-6, on a Kayla Womack (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North HS) three pointer at the 15:13 mark. Womack would finish the game with nine points and two rebounds.
Saginaw Valley entered halftime trailing by a score of 31-21. The Cardinals shot 7-for-16 (.466) from the floor in the first half.
Northeastern St. started the second half on a 29-5 run to pull away from the Cardinals in the second half as they went on to the 74-38 victory.
Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) finished with eight points, 7 rebounds and two blocks for the Cardinals.
Saginaw Valley will now return home to host GLIAC foe Grand Valley State University on Thursday (Jan. 5) at 6:00 PM.
