KENOSHA, Wis. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to No. 16 Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon (Nov. 19) by a score of 67-50. The loss drops Saginaw Valley to 0-2 on the season, while Wisconsin-Parkside improves to 2-1.
Freshman Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich.) knocked down a jumper with 13:28 to go to help pull the Cardinals out of an early hole as the Rangers lead was 8-7. Zirzow finished with eight points and six rebounds on the evening.
Wisconsin-Parkside would increase their lead to 28-15 at the 2:25 mark of the first half before the Cardinals went on a 7-0 run to close out the half. Jasmine Woods (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) capitalized on a three-point play with under thirty seconds to play to cut the Ranger lead to six at 28-22 going into the intermission.
The Rangers would go on a 20-4 run to start the second half and take a 48-26 lead with just over ten minutes remaining in regulation.
The Cardinals would cut the deficit to 63-49 when Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) nailed a triple from beyond the arc with just 1:35 left in the contest. The Rangers' lead was too much for the Cardinals to overcome as they fell 67-50. Greene would earn Meijer "Player of the Game" honors as she recorded 14 points.
The Cardinals would out-rebound the Rangers 39-37 and also record six blocks on the evening.
Junior center Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) was a force on the boards for the Cardinals as she pulled down 13 rebounds and added five points and five blocks.
The Cardinals return to action next Friday (Nov. 25) when they travel to Indianapolis to battle the Greyhounds in the University of Indianapolis Thanksgiving Classic.
