Track and Field Claims Two GLIAC Titles on Day Two of Outdoor Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field team claimed two GLIAC titles on the second day of the outdoor championship meet.

Natalie Formsma won the heptathlon. She won the long jump with a mark of 5.42m, finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:37.36, and was ninth in the javelin with a throw of 22.11m. She won three of the seven events and finished in the top three in two more, finishing with 4,514 points and claiming the GLIAC title.

Xavier Santiago also claimed a GLIAC title with a win in the men's high jump. Santiago set a new SVSU outdoor record in the victory, clearing the bar at 2.19m to win the event. That height is currently ranked second in NCAA Division II.

Carter Wolf finished the decathlon with 5,276 points for fifth place. He began day two with a fourth-place showing in the 100m hurdles after a time of 17.28 seconds. He moved on to win the discus after a toss of 37.07m. Wolf finished the final two events with a 30.51m javelin throw and a time of 4:56.00 in the 1500m. The throw earned him fifth, and the time placed him third to help toward his final score.

Corey Bowers earned six points for the Men with his third-place finish in the steeplechase. His time of 9:08.64 was a new PR for the senior, who reached the podium.

Christian Purchase added six points to the team effort with his third-place mark of 50.80m in the men's javelin.

Kinsie Jacques and Alexis Tracy added seven points to the women's total with their finishes in the women's 10K. Jacques placed fourth with a PR of 36:05.38, while Tracy was seventh with her time of 37:39.43.

Adam Thomas and Nick McArdle did the same for the men's 10K, earning seventh points, after Thomas was fourth with a time of 30:01.44 and McArdle was seventh with a finish of 30:55.11.

Noah Shaw earned five points in the hammer throw with his fourth-place mark of 58.52m. Andrew Quinn earned fifth with a toss of 51.91m to grab another four points for the Cardinals. Ryan Reynolds scored one more with eighth in the event after hitting 44.21m.

Abby Karst hit a PR in the javelin throw and finished sixth with a mark of 34.77m. Her finish earned three points to the women's team total.

Preston Kelsey finished long jump in eighth with a distance of 6.62m to snag another point for the men.

Timyah Meeks earned a point for her eighth-place finish in the women's hammer after she marked at 46.27m.

Tori Henson was the final Cardinal to score team points on day two. She was eighth in the long jump after a best leap of 5.43m.

Tara Szuper and Karissa Picard qualified for the women's 1500m final tomorrow after finishing second and third in the preliminary heats. Szuper crossed the finish line in 4:45.71 to record the second-fastest finish, while Picard finished third with 4:57.78.

The Cardinal men also placed second and third in the 1500m prelims. Justin Roose finished in 4:04.39 for second, and Jacob Walker clocked a 4:04.52 for third. Both will compete in the 1500m finals tomorrow. Joining them is Dominic Suliman, who earned the automatic qualifier for his heat after finishing the race in 4:10.43.

Grace Collett and Marisa Johnson claimed the third and fourth-fastest times in the 100m hurdle prelims. Collett earned an automatic qualifier with her time of 14.59, while Johnson finished just behind her in 14.73 to earn a spot in the final race. Johnson also hit a PR in the 200m prelims at 24.70 seconds and advanced to the finals tomorrow.

Darryl Carter hit a PR in the men's 400m prelims with his time of 47.81, which was also the fastest time of the day.

Trevor Culpepper, Zachary Harlan, and Matthew Gazzarato all earned spots in the 100m finals with their finishes. Culpepper was second with his time of 10.71 seconds, Harlan hit a PR with 10.83 for the sixth-best time, and Gazzarato was eighth with a time of 10.90.

Sydney Fontaine finished the women's 800m prelims with a time of 2:17.84 to qualify for the final race with the second-best time of the day.

Bryce Husen placed third in the 800m prelims with his auto qualifying time of 1:55.40. Suliman was just behind him with a time of 1:55.96 for fourth. Both advanced on to the final race on Friday.

Samuel Meriweather placed sixth in the men's 200m with a time of 21.61. He will race tomorrow in the finals.

The men currently sit in third on the team standings with 44 points after day two of three. The women have 30 points and are just five points back of Northern Michigan, which sits in fourth place in the standings.

UP NEXT: The GLIAC Outdoor Championships conclude tomorrow. The first track event is the women's 4x100 relay at 11:10 a.m. (ET). Field events will begin at 10:00 a.m. (ET), The men's shot put, women's discus, men's triple jump, and women's high jump all kick things off.
