UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program is cheering for a new team across the pond. Graduate Eoin Farrell signed a professional contract over the holiday season with The New Saints FC in the Cymru Premier, part of the Welsh football system, and made his professional debut by starting in the final match of phase one for TNS in a 1–0 victory over Colwyn Bay.
Farrell joined the Cardinals this past season as a transfer from Hofstra. The Irish midfielder spent two years with the Pride after transferring from University College Dublin in Ireland, where he helped lead his team to a Collingwood Cup championship in 2022. During his time at Hofstra, Farrell started 29 of his 39 appearances, scoring four goals and adding three assists as the Pride won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.
SVSU head coach Louis Barrow shared his excitement for Farrell's achievement.
"I'm incredibly proud of Eoin and absolutely delighted to see him sign a professional contract with TNS," Barrow said. "He was an outstanding person, player, and captain for us at SVSU, and he epitomized everything you want in a leader—relentless work ethic, total commitment, and genuine professional standards every single day."
With SVSU, Farrell started all 14 matches in which he appeared, scoring eight goals and adding two assists. He helped lead the Cardinals to a GLIAC regular season championship, as SVSU finished the year 11-3-4 overall and 9-2-1 in conference play. Due to his elite performance, Farrell was named GLIAC Player of the Year and earned D2CCA All-Midwest Region First Team honors.
Barrow continued by highlighting the significance of Farrell's professional opportunity.
"Eoin earned this opportunity through consistency and character, and I have no doubt he'll thrive in a professional environment," Barrow said. "Moments like this also reinforce what we believe in here at SVSU—that with the right development, standards, and networks, we can open real pathways into the professional game. This is a fantastic next step for Eoin, and one we're all extremely proud of."
Looking ahead in his career, Farrell has joined the most successful club in the Cymru Premier. The New Saints have won a league-record 17 titles, and following Tuesday's victory, hold a six-point lead in the standings. TNS is also the only club from the Welsh league system to qualify for the group or league phase of a European competition, earning a spot in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League for the 2024–25 season after winning the league title.
