Saginaw Valley State University head men’s basketball coach Chris Fowler announced the addition of Ryan Mizner to his coaching staff as an assistant coach in May 2025. Mizner brings more than a decade of experience across NCAA Division I and II programs, known for his player development expertise, high-level scouting acumen, and ability to foster strong player-coach relationships. A native of Michigan, Mizner has built a respected reputation in the state’s basketball community, mentoring All-Conference talent at every level he’s coached.

Ryan began his coaching career in West Michigan, leading the Grand Rapids Storm 15U and 16U squads from 2008–2011. In that role, he developed young talent, instilled fundamentals, and prepared players for the jump to high school competition.

He then made the transition to the college level as an assistant coach at Lake Superior State University from 2011 to 2014. There, under the direction of GLIAC Coach of the Year Steve Hettinga, the Lakers captured the 2014 GLIAC Regular Season and North Division titles and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. During his tenure, Mizner worked closely with standout players such as Derek Billing, Cam Metz, and Alex Williams, helping each refine their games, strengthen decision-making under pressure, and maximize their collegiate potential.

In 2014, Mizner joined Central Michigan University’s men’s basketball staff as a Graduate Assistant under the direction of AP National Coach of the Year, Keno Davis. During his time at CMU, the Chippewas captured the 2015 MAC Regular Season Championship and earned an NIT berth. Ryan played a key role in player development, scouting, and day-to-day operations. Most notably, he formed a strong mentoring relationship with Chris Fowler, then CMU’s All-MAC point guard and now SVSU’s head coach. Mizner also supported the development of several other All-MAC performers during that stretch, including John Simons & Luke Meyer, helping elevate a high-performing roster into one of the MAC’s elite teams.

Off the court, Ryan is passionate about fostering inclusion and authenticity in athletics. He has used his platform to support diversity in sport and to mentor coaches and athletes on living and leading with integrity.

Ryan is also a full time Realtor and now resides in Freeland, Michigan with his husband Nolan and their two dogs, Luna and JoJo.
