KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball program played two games against Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon at Historic Simmons Field. The Cardinals (27-17, 9-10 GLIAC) won game one 4-2 and lost game two 3-0 against the Rangers (27-17, 9-10 GLIAC).
JJ Arbini (W, 6-2) pitched a solid five innings, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks. Jake Shelagowski (Sv, 10) tied the program record for saves with 10, matching the mark set by Scott Clark in 1995. He pitched two innings in game one, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. Chase Raymond (L, 4-3) went seven innings in the second contest, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six. Daniel Wilcome pitched a scoreless frame in relief, allowing three walks and striking out three.
Lucas Mead went 4-for-7 on the day, collecting two hits in each game. Ethan Scheib led the offense in game one with a 3-for-4 performance, tallying a triple, an RBI, and scoring a run. Austin Cicerone, Aaron Bess, and Connor Cornwell all went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Bess and Cornwell each recorded an RBI.
Game One: SVSU 4, UWP 2
Three scoreless innings opened the game before the Cardinals jumped out with a three-run fourth inning. Bess doubled home Cicerone before scoring on a Cornwell single. Scheib then singled into center field, bringing Cornwell around to score and make it 3-0. UWP scored a pair in their half of the inning with an RBI hit-by-pitch and an RBI groundout.
Arbini and Shelagowski allowed only one baserunner combined in the fifth and sixth innings as SVSU added insurance in the top of the sixth. A single and a walk put two runners on, and Mead singled through the left side to score Scheib, making it 4-2. After an out to start the bottom of the seventh, the Rangers got a hit-by-pitch and a single to put two on. Shelagowski induced a groundout and struck out the final batter to secure his 10th save of the season.
Game Two: SVSU 0, UWP 3
In game 44 of the season, the Cardinals were shut out for the first time in 2025. Three hits and four walks helped Saginaw Valley threaten in the first three innings, but the Rangers' pitching staff faced the minimum through the next four innings. UWP took the lead in the third with an RBI double and an RBI single before adding one more run in the sixth.
SVSU got a two-out hit from Scheib in the eighth and a leadoff double from Mead in the ninth but couldn't rally to push those runs across.
